Afghan refugees: donations

Many South Cambridgeshire residents have been deeply moved by the events in Afghanistan and want to donate and help Afghan refugees relocating to the UK through the Government’s Afghan Locally Employed Support (LES) scheme. The District Council has advised that they have made three homes available for Afghan families relocating to the UK. These homes will be fully furnished and up to three months’ worth of food and essential supplies are provided to help the families start new lives. Their latest update can be found here, announcing our partnership with Cambridge City Council to provide wraparound support for the Afghan families.

At this time, The Council are unable to accept donations directly, but anyone who would like to donate their time, goods, or money can do so through the following national and local organisations:

  1. Cambridge Convoy Refugee Action Group
  2. Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum
  3. Distribute Aid

Neighbourhood Alert – Safer Speeding Team Day of Action

Last month the Constabulary created a new team dedicated to cracking down on speeding drivers across the county’s cities, towns, villages and rural roads.

Officers from the Special Constabulary including myself, Special Inspector Stephen Mudie, Special Sergeant Tom Howard and a band of Special Constables form the southern ‘Neighbourhood Safer Speed Team’. They volunteer their time responding to concerns from residents around speeding and anti-social driving.

The team also support local Community Speedwatch groups with enforcement and education.
Today (2 September) the team concentrated their efforts in Great Shelford, Fulbourn, Balsham, Hardwick and Milton Road.

We issued six tickets for speeding, including one for travelling 59mph in a 40mph in Hardwick. We also issued two tickets for no seatbelts.

In addition, we gave words of advice to multiple drivers around speeding and spoke to riders about the laws around e-scooters.

A lorry driver was reported for dangerous driving after he was seen on the A14 holding paperwork with one hand and entering a destination on his sat nav with the other.

If speeding is an issue in your area, we’d like to know about it. Please report your concerns to us here.

Cambridge County Council – Riparian Guidance and survey

As part of our Community Flood Action Programme, Cambridge County Council are updating their riparian guidance document to make it more useful for those living next to a watercourse. As this document is aimed at residents and landowners, they wish to seek their views and get a better understanding of their awareness of riparian issues. The Council have therefore prepared a short survey (5 questions)

A link to the survey is here: https://forms.office.com/r/5HQbNqGtba

They plan to keep the survey open until 30th September but they may extend this if necessary.

In addition, the County Council would be grateful of any photos communities may have of watercourses, to include in the guidance document. If anyone would like to submit photos, please email them to CFAP@cambridgeshire.gov.uk, and include the name they would like to be credited as.

Works by Anglian Water in Cottenham

Cottenham Parish Council have received the following update from Anglian Water, regarding the upcoming works in Cottenham; Anglian Water have made the decision to postpone the work.

Following our conversations, and having listened to the concerns of the residents of Cottenham, we have decided to delay the works. This means that the work (and associated traffic management) will not begin on the 1st September. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for an inadvertent confusion caused by this process.

Whilst these works are essential, we have taken on board the comments that you have kindly provided, and have made the decision to remodel and amend the works to understand if we can complete with less impact on the village. We did originally plan for these works to go ahead in the summer, as you will know, however this wasn’t possible due to Highways England work on the A14.

It will likely be a number of months before we are able to begin this work due to highways permits and notices, but I would be hugely grateful if we could work together to minimise the impact, appreciating that you all have a great understanding of the community and resident’s needs. As these plans are developed we will be doing much more communication with individuals and businesses.
