Sling your hook Campaign

Sling your hook campaign launched by Neighbourhood Watch to tackle scams

We are excited to tell you more about our SLING YOUR HOOK campaign running throughout July to help tackle scams

WHY ‘SLING YOUR HOOK’?
The campaign taps into the psychology that scammers use to hook people in, helping you stay one step ahead and protect yourself and your loved ones against the increasing variety of scams happening every day. We’ve identified the following five behaviours scammers commonly use: They imply they’re doing you a favour (reciprocity) They indicate everyone else is doing this (social proof) They say your only chance is to act now (urgency) They act like they’re similar to you, so you like them and want to please them (connection) They ask you to do one little thing which makes you do more (commitment).
We also know that often victims of scams report that in hindsight they felt something wasn’t quite right at the time.  This campaign aims to raise awareness of the tactics scammers use and encourages people to ‘stop and think’ if something doesn’t FEEL, SEEM, LOOK or SOUND right.  This allows them time to trust your gut instinct and help prevent becoming a scam victim.

“Everyone likes to feel special. But watch out! If a stranger is going out of their way for you, something fishy may be going on instead. Scammers like to offer one-off deals and favours. Don’t be afraid to tell them no.” John Hayward-Cripps, CEO of Neighbourhood Watch Network

Covid-19 community update – 17 June 2021

Update and information from South Cambs District Council

I’m sure that, like me, you are disappointed about the delay to the relaxation of rules until 19 July (more below), but with the increase of the Delta variant, we need to keep up our guard against the spread of the virus. It may have felt over the last month or two that regularly taking Lateral Flow Tests wasn’t an urgent priority, but with cases on the rise again right across the country, the best way for everyone to protect family, friends, colleagues and other members of the community is to regularly (twice a week) take a Lateral Flow Test. Every asymptomatic positive case picked up by the Lateral Flow Tests means another person with Covid-19 who doesn’t spread the virus to others. You can order tests online to be delivered to your home – so it is easy to organise.

End of lockdown delayed to 19 July

The Prime Minister confirmed earlier this week that lockdown restrictions, with some exceptions, will be extended by four weeks, to 19 July. The 30-guest cap for weddings will be lifted, with the maximum number of attendees to be based on the venue capacity (allowing for social distancing). The Prime Minister said it was “time to ease off the accelerator” in order “to save many thousands of lives”. He described 19 July as a “terminus date”.

Vaccination update

The Prime Minister provided an update on the vaccination programme and confirmed that vaccination greatly reduces transmission with two doses providing a high degree of protection against serious illness and death. The Government’s target of offering vaccines to all adults by the end of July has been brought forward to the new 19 July date.

  • As of this week, anyone over the age of 21 can book a vaccination appointment – with this to be widened to over 18s from tomorrow (Friday 18 June)
  • Those people above the age of 40 who used the national booking system can reduce the period between their first and second jabs from 12 weeks to 8 weeks. They should first cancel the 12 week appointment, after which they will see the available 8 week appointments to make a new booking.

Translations of easy-read Covid-19 vaccination leaflets

Public Health England (PHE) has published translated versions of easy-read leaflets on the Covid-19 vaccinations. The leaflets, which include information on what to expect after your vaccine and information for women who are pregnant or are breastfeeding their baby, are now available in 21 languages including English, Arabic, Urdu and Polish. COVID-19 vaccination: easy-read leaflets.

Safe and Well visits

Colleagues supporting the South Cambs Community Safety Partnership are promoting the opportunity for vulnerable residents to have free Safe and Well visits. You can find out more in a recent update from the Fire Service. The Safe and Well team visit residents’ homes to assess six key elements:

  • Fire safety in the home – including cooking, general safety and escape plans.
  • Falls prevention – including simple remedial action such as replacing lightbulbs or taping down loose carpet.
  • Alcohol use – alcohol related hospital admissions are steadily increasing.
  • Stay well and warm – can residents afford to heat their home? Do they have access to a hot meal? Do they access the all the services available to them?
  • Crime reduction – providing advice on making their home more secure in addition to advice to make them less vulnerable to scams or fraud.
  • Smoking – if people need a helping hand to quit, our Safe and Well partners can offer the help and advice people need.
  • Hoarding – if people need advice in relation to the health and safety of individuals with hoarding concerns.

Find out if someone is eligible for a free Safe and Well visit by completing a short questionnaire or contact the automated message line on 0800 917 9994 and leave a message including the person’s name, address and daytime phone number to receive a call back.

What do adults with learning disabilities need?

Cambridgeshire County Council has launched a survey to find out what adults with a learning disability in Cambridgeshire think is important to help them to live happier, healthier lives. This will help the County Council to know what to focus on when planning services and supporting people with a learning disability in the future. Have your say before 30 June 2021. Or if you’d like to share this information in your community, please feel free to share these Facebook or Twitter posts.

We will send a further community update when there is useful information to share. Thank you again for all your support.

Neighbourhood Watch Alert

WIN A FUN-FILLED TREEHOUSE ADVENTURE STAYCATION
To mark the end of a very successful Neighbourhood Watch Week, and to celebrate the release of The Croods 2: A New Age, we are delighted to launch a prize draw on our Facebook page to give you the opportunity to win a fun-filled treehouse adventure.

The Croods 2: A New Age, which is in cinemas on 16th July 2021, celebrates community, neighbourliness, inclusivity, and working together – values that are close to the heart of all Neighbourhood Watch supporters. The opportunity presented by this partnership enables us to reach more young families and to build on the awareness of Neighbourhood Watch as positive and approachable. The Croods and the Bettermans are two very different families who are thrown together and have to learn to live with one another when an evil tribe of monkeys threaten their homes. The Croods and the Bettermans realise that home is not a place, its people, and together they create history’s first neighbourhood!

Neighbourhood Watch’s partnership with this film provides the opportunity to promote the importance of neighbourliness and community spirit to new audiences and across diverse communities. We know many young people and their families share the values that we stand for and this partnership gives them an introduction to Neighbourhood Watch and hopefully they will become supporters for life.

The Croods faced their biggest threat when they left their cave – another family – while we are offering an opportunity to leave your cave behind and experience a very different treehouse adventure with your family! To be in with a chance to win this amazing prize, be sure to visit our Facebook page and enter the prize draw. Terms and conditions can be found here.

South Cambs business Support Update – April 2021

We hope everyone is having a pleasant week and are feeling more positive as we journey through the roadmap to recovery and businesses begin to re-open. You should have received our email on Wednesday with updates on grant funding and we will update you on further Covid support over the coming weeks.

Today we wanted to focus on some of the broader updates and support that is available to you – from our own free-to-attend webinars to support your business, where you can find guidance on Covid safety measures, and news of opportunities that could help your business.

Safely re-opening

Working safely guidance

South Cambridgeshire District council has detailed guidance and advice on our website to support businesses as they safely re-open.

The council has also provided a video presentation answering some of the questions raised from step two of the roadmap to recovery. You can watch the video here.

Extra support for local businesses adapting to Covid-secure measures

South Cambridgeshire’s Environmental Health team will be working with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) from next week to give businesses extra support to put Covid-secure measures in place.

From Monday (26 April) HSE officers will call or visit South Cambridgeshire’s retail, hospitality, leisure, close contact services and science park businesses, checking Covid-secure measures are in place and providing advice.

Supporting local businesses: please respond to our survey

Last summer the Reopening the High Streets Safely team sent out surveys to business owners. These surveys were very useful in helping us plan a response to the pandemic. Now we have an updated version which will help us to compare how attitudes have changed and identify how best to support local businesses and residents as we continue to reopen the High Street. Visit our South Cambridgeshire COVID-19 surveys web page

There is also a separate survey for residents to complete.

Events

South Cambridgeshire District Council is offering a series of webinars that provide a chance for local businesses to engage with Council services and develop skills to help you run your business successfully.

Mental health

Mental ill-health increasingly affects people and is among the leading cause of sickness absence in the workplace. Added to the stress of keeping your business going during the pandemic, there are many reasons people need support: financial insecurity; not seeing family, friends, colleagues or customers. Whatever the size of your business, everyone needs help sometimes. Our guest speakers Nick Elston and Zoe Thompson are hosting a series of free to attend webinars to help business leaders cope through difficult times. Click on the links below to register:

How to tender for Council contracts

Local authorities outsource a number of goods and services, be that building services, catering or IT. How do they decide which supplier to contract, and how can local businesses, especially smaller ones, win bids for these contracts? We are running a series of webinars throughout the year offering businesses a chance to learn how to successfully tender for Council contracts. The next event is on 14 July at 2pm and you can register here.
