As the Smithsonian’s first photographer, Thomas Smillie used images to catalog the much of the institution’s physical object collection, ranging from stuffed animals to plant fossils, decorative boxes, and beyond. The photographs themselves are now part of the Smithsonian’s collection. This image depicts an object from the Smithsonian fountain pen collection.
